It took a World War to raise the once sleepy Chula Vista from its agricultural roots and set it on the path to becoming the San Diego metro area’s second largest city.
To be honest, part of the credit for the city’s growth goes to Fred Rohr. This Chula Vista resident started Rohr Aircraft Corporation in the early 1940s, a company whose growth brought thousands of new residents to town to help manufacture airplane parts after the attack on Pearl Harbor. During the ensuing decade, Chula Vista’s population more than tripled.
Today, our gorgeous city is home to more than 270,000 residents and a growing and thriving business community. Located mid-way between Downtown San Diego and the Mexican border, Chula Vista offers two main districts, each with homes and amenities to fit any lifestyle.

Eastlake and Otay Ranch are master-planned communities, the former developed in 1987 while the latter is still growing. Both communities are full of lovely neighborhoods and boast top-ranked schools and convenient amenities. Best of all, homes here are downright affordable compared to nearby areas.
You’ll not have to drive far to shop, whether you need to visit Home Depot at Eastlake Terraces, Trader Joe’s at Village Walk at Eastlake or to see a movie at Otay Ranch Center. You’ll find other shopping centers scattered throughout Eastlake as well. The community is also home to the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
Homes here consist of both single-family and multi-family homes. In both communities, most of the homes offer three or four bedrooms but you will find a fair share of both larger and smaller homes.

Life in Chula Vista’s Rancho del Rey community is, in a word, convenient. You’ll rarely need to leave the area for recreation, shopping and dining and residents love that East H St. bisects the community, offering snappy access to local highways. There are also trails that will take hikers, bikers and walkers across the community.
You’ll find Rancho del Rey south of the Bonita community and west of Otay Ranch, north of Telegraph Canyon Rd.
On weekends, you’ll find many of the 6,420 residents using one of the two area parks. Discovery Park, the larger of the two with more than 20 acres, offers fields where you’ll find locals playing softball or soccer, using the trails to run, walk their dogs and ride bikes or having a picnic. Discovery is located on Rancho del Rey’s eastern border. Further south you’ll find the slightly more than 11-acre Voyager Park, with two large soccer fields and a playground for the little ones.
Rancho del Rey Middle School, ranked 410 of 2,482 middle schools in California by school ratings site SchoolDigger.com, is located adjacent to Voyager. Bonita Vista High School, whose students outscore the district and state on assessment tests, is located on the community’s eastern border and, just south of that, Southwestern College.
The north side of H Street is where you’ll find much of the community’s commercial area with a shopping center, restaurants, a movie theater, bowling center and more.
Homes in Rancho del Rey represent a mix of sizes and styles, with both single and multi-family dwellings, the largest share of which offer 3 or 4 bedrooms. The homeownership rate here is 64 percent.
